ISO Standards Handbook - Cranes

This two volumes set ISO Standards Handbook, Cranes, is presented here in its first edition. It contains a total of 93 standards, 50 of which have been developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC96 and 43 standards developed by other ISO technical committees. Also included in the handbook are the ISO technical reports ISO/TR12100, Part 1 and Part 2 regarding Safety of Machinery - Basic concepts and general principles for design. This handbook is a comprehensive and detailed compilation of the ISO standards in the field it covers.


The main reason for producing an ISO standards handbook (two volumes) for cranes are the following.

• To gather together in a clear way the many ISO crane standards developed today.
• To facilitate the work of everyone active in the field of cranes (designers, supervisors and other personnel as well as people directly or indirectly responsible for the safe use and maintenance) who need to consult the current international documentation for cranes.
• To facilitate the application of the ISO standards and to assist in design, purchase, manufacture and education.
• To contribute to further international harmonization of safety requirements for cranes.
• The handbook will be of benefit, not only for crane manufacturers but for many other such as:
• Crane operators, crane owners, society, authorities, crane consultants, crane agencies and crane selling companies, standardization experts, crane training institutes and enterprises and crane maintenance providers.

The standards related to cranes have been combined into a two-volume set, broken down into sections, covering basic standards for vocabularity, use, operation and maintenance, design and accessories, i.e. chains and chain slings, steel wire ropes and wire rope slings.

The handbook has been edited by the Swedish Crane and Lift Standardization - IKH (affiliated to SIS) and produced by the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) in cooperation with the ISO Central Secretariat.
